Boys Only/Girls Only

On Friday morning, I left Aidan and Tim together, and I came home.  This was the first time ever that they had spent the weekend alone.  It was officially Boys Only.  I thought I would feel some kinda way about it, but I really didn’t until I was getting ready to leave and Aidan said “Mama, please don’t go.”  **Heartbreak**

But I went. And Friday night began my first offical Girls Only Weekend.  What did I do?  Why, I celebrated my Sweet Sixteen.  Saturday, November 7, marked the very day that I pledged.  16 years ago.  My line sisters came from near and far and we had a blast just being together and hanging out.  It didn’t hurt that it was also JSU’s homecoming weekend.

Even though I had a marvelous time, I still missed Aidan and little bit.  And they missed me a little bit.  Well, Aidan said that he missed me so much that he wanted to cry, but he didn’t because his Daddy don’t play that.  When Sunday came I was sad to say goodbye to my girls, but ready to see my men.  When Sunday came Aidan was asking if he could please stay another day because he just didn’t want the fun with his Daddy to end;  but Daddy was ready for the fun to come to a halt.  (Boo hiss Daddy)

So, all in all, it was a wonderful weekend all around.  Boys Only/Girls Only was a success!

How was your weekend?

This Weekend We….

…..played tennis.  Well, actually I played tennis.  Did I tell you guys I had taken up tennis?  Friday night, I went to a tennis mixer, and Saturday morning I went to run some drills at Tennis South.  While this is a whole other post within itself, let me just say that I had been playing bourgeious tennis at the Reservoir Y and when I got to South Jackson…. it was ON!

…..went to sleep and left Aidan up by himself.  I felt so sorry for him with me upstairs in bed and Tim on the couch.  Both of us knew we needed to wake up, but neither one of us could.  You know it’s bad when he comes to you and says “Mom, can I have some Oreos?”  And you tell him no, get candy instead.  Why?  Because he can reach the candy by himself.  I would have had to get up and get the Oreos.  Finally, he gave up and went and laid down.

….. had an impromptu barbeque with NerdGirl, Smoochy, and Lovegirl as special guests.  Let’s just make an understatement and say that Tim and Smoochy hit it off properly.  Any man who likes beer and pork  is certainly Tim’s kind of people.  The kids played.  NerdGirl and I watched t.v. and ear hustled the men’s conversation.  We discussed hip hop music, Joe Jackson and Air McNair.  NerdGirl brought wine.  All was well!

….. fell asleep again.  This time Nadia was up with Aidan.  It was raining outside, the kids were upstairs watching a movie.  Why not sleep?  And why is it that AidaNadia get along like they’re both the same age?  Aidan really does work his sister’s nerves.  Way to go, Aidan!

…. ate leftovers and watched Army Wives.  Does anyone watch besides me?  Was anyone cheering for Joan when she killed that dood?

What was up with your weekend?  What were the haps around your way?

Its a Reunion/This Weekend

This weekend was the family reunion in Memphis.   I got there too late for the picnic on Friday, which was over early due to it being hot as Hades.  But when I got there I found two of my favorite chaps freshly bathed up and supposedly getting ready to have an evening nap.  Much to Granny’s dismay, they were not having it.

Naptime....NOT!

Naptime....NOT!

So, Friday was spent hanging out with my brother and sister-in-law around about Memphis.  And Saturday we lunched!  I decided upon the fish fry since you all suggested it and Tim recommended it.  I made potato salad, a green salad, some shrimp, and two marvelous pies and Timothy fried fish.  It went off without a hitch!  Tim got some face time in with Dad and the Uncles and neither of them declared Tim unfit, so everything was good.  Oh…and how about he ratted me out to my mom that I’d left the oven a mess after baking some sweet potatoes.  A month ago.  She suggested that I get some oven cleaner and clean out Tim’s oven.  I mean, really?  He had to do me like THAT?

Saturday, we had a little banquet, and you all know how I feel about banquets.  I managed to make it out without clawing out my own eyeballs, but I realized that I didn’t take any pictures the whole weekend.  Argh!  I got Tim to snap one of me and my brother, which is a rare sighting.  Then I snapped one of him looking all preachery.  I just love that dood in a suit!

Preacher-y

Doesn’t the look on his face show just how happy he was to be there?  Sunday we napped, Aidan cried because he missed Paw Paw, Nadia changed her myspace for the umpteenth million time, and Tim burned up some ribs while I scorched some baked beans.  And I cleaned the oven.  And that was that.

How was your weekend?

I never pictured myself an orchestra kind of girl, but when Nerd Girl invited us out for an evening on the Reservoir with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra I figured why not?  So, on Friday night, we ventured out to the reservoir with blankets and picnic fixings in tow.  I’d never heard the Symphony Orchestra, so I didn’t really have high expectations.  I just wanted to be outside near the river with the wind blowing through my hair.

I don’t know about NerdGirl, but I had a blast.  And I think Aidan had two blasts.  And together with Lovegirl and her friend, I could swear I heard three blasts.  The orchestra was wonderful and the atmosphere was delightful.  We sat on our picnic blankets while kids played all around and parents chased them, some people watched from their boats, some sat on blankets and sipped wine, and while we sat and talked about this and that.  Meanwhile, the kids that belonged to us ran and played and danced the night away.  At the beginning there was fear of the fireworks amongst them.  At the end, they just wanted to stay a little longer.  Me, too.

Playing. What a Night!

If you ever have a chance, I suggest that you go see the symphony.  Especially if you can do it under the moonlight.  You won’t be disappointed.

Friday night:  Dinner at Red Lobster with NerdGirl and LoveGirl.  I guess they are the only two who can convince him to go to Red Lobster on a day other than Sunday.  That child swears that you can ONLY go to Red Lobster on Sundays after church.

Saturday:  A fabulous birthday party for two fabulous twins.  Sitting around on the porch shooting the breeze with someone I’ve formed an unlikely friendship with.  And mommy and Aidan movie night, starring Horton of “Horton Hears a Who” fame.  I was asleep less than halfway through it.

Sunday:  Dog Washing, Car Washing, and dinner at NerdGirls.

Charming.  How was your weekend?

A Day Out with Thomas

This weekend the 3 Wilson families traveled from Jackson, Atlanta, and The Gulf Coast and met in Birmingham.  Why?  So that these two:

Could go here:

And see this (or, should I say him):

We all had a great time riding Thomas the Train, who remarkably pushed us backwards about 10 miles into the woods, then brought us back to the station.  In 30 minutes.  For $140.  But I digress…As you can see, we had a lovely ride:

And a good time:

We stayed at a fabulous hotel, we had a fine dining experience (everyone except for Aidan, which is a post for another day), and my sister-in-law and I shopped until the stores closed (about an hour).  But, really, none of us had nearly as much fun as these four:

Good times, man.  Can’t wait to do it again.  Soon.

I made the potatoes

Disclaimer:  I’m not sure how to spell potatoes.  Potatos? And don’t tell me in the comments, I don’t wanna know that bad.

Anyway, I remember one day when I was young,  my mom made scalloped potatoes.  This was when she had gotten her new food processor and something processed was the order of the day.  I watched with curiosity as she made these potatoes.  And they were good.  And cheesy.

So, I’d been bragging about a special dinner that I was going to make for Tim, and he and Aidan had been wanting these pork chops.  Well, what goes better than cheesy potatoes?  I started cooking my mommy’s scalloped au gratin potatoes with care.  And a heart full of love.  I was going to impress both my babies with my potato skills, sho’nuf.  I even put some bacon in them because Tim loves bacon.  And he loves me.  So, he had to love the potatoes.

They cooked perfectly.  They were beautiful.  I put them on the table with memories of mommy’s potatoes, so proud of myself.

Tim:  I hate au gratin potatoes.
The little Tim: Ew! I don’t like those!

Heartbreak happens.

Weekend Roundup

This weekend, Tim was finally home.  Yay!  Of course, he had basketball so we made the trek to Memphis.  Boo!  While there, we did absolutely nothing.  Basketball was cancelled because of the weather, so we sat on the couch while Aidan played with a variety of cars and trucks and chess pieces and basketballs and whistles.  Oh, wait.  I did do something.  I cooked.

This is how you know somebody loves you, when they venture out in this weather to this store to get you some pork chops:

pork-chop-run

And while you’re slaving over the hot stove, the menfolk that have made the pork chop request are outside doing this:

playing-in-the-snow

In case you missed what this actually is, I’m standing inside taking pictures (hence the big window screen) while they throw snowballs at me.  From outside.  And I’m inside.  Well, at least it was fun for them, although it was a little weird getting window hit by snowballs.

Wait, let me pause here to mention something.  On the day it snowed in Jackson, I begged Aidan to go outside with me.  Finally, he went and only stayed about 2 minutes ’cause he was sooo cold.  On the day it snows at Daaaady’s house, he begs Daaaady to go outside and play.  And I had to stay inside.  Say it with me…”losers.”

How was the weather by you this weekend?

Everybody Oughta Praise His Name

A couple Sundays ago, the Pastor Ervin gave us parents a stern talking to about not bringing our kids to church. Not just on Sunday, but for Youth Ministry, Sunday School and various other things. I felt bad, because I have a child that truly loves church and I knew I should be doing better.

So, Thursday night I took him to youth choir rehearsal. At first, he bawled his eyes out, but then he realized there was clapping, drumming, and his friend Walter involved so he jumped right on in. He learned the songs, and boy did he practice for his Sunday debut.

Saturday, we woke up early (for us) and went to Youth Ministry. They had health awareness day and a lady came and did some aerobics moves for the kids. Aidan may as well have been in heaven. He had the time of his life. But, nothing compares to this day:

the-choir

You can’t tell that child that he was not up there singing.  (Aidan is the second little kid on the first row, next to the singer.)  When he finally got into his clapping groove, he was lovin’ the choir.  Especially since he got a good view of both the drummer and the Pastor Ervin.  Next to watching the Pastor Ervin baptize, he thinks the choir is the best thing going.

I was so proud watching him up there in the choir stand having fun and singing.  He was so happy.  I’m glad that the Pastor Ervin chastised us for not bringing them.  Watching him and knowing he wouldn’t have been up there but for that speech the Pastor made that day, I wondered “What took me so long?”

The moral of the story is:  take your kids to church.  They really do need and deserve it.

I’m With Him

This weekend we went to Memphis, as you all know.  Nothing monumental to report, just a regular ole weekend in Memphis.  In which Tim had to officiate basketball games, and Aidan and I tagged along to watch some exciting 9th grade basketball.

Normally, I can sit there and listen to the referee bashing that will inevitably happen.  I can tune it out, and sometimes even laugh about it.  I mean, really, sometimes they do have some good “bald headed” jokes.  But there is one thing that I simply can’t get with…”They’re cheating.”

Saturday night, as I sat in the stands, some high school kid, loud as I dunno what, stood up and said “That ref is cheating!”.  And I swiftly, before I knew it, got all up in her azz.   And her mama swiftly got up in MY azz.  But, I was determined that I was going to hold up, so the kid and the mama got something they weren’t expecting that night.  A natural cussing out.  Remember when that basketball player was fighting and his wife starting hitting the other dood with her purse?  That was almost me.

I just knew Tim was going to hear this and tell me to shut the hell up, so I shut up and let them have the last word when I saw Tim looking at me.  But I did manage to flip them a good bird while he wasn’t looking.

Moral of the story:  People, the referees are people, too.  They have families that come to the games to support them, just like you come to support your team, and they really do happen to be very skilled at what they’re doing.  They don’t just show up for the game just to have fun — this is WORK for them.  So, you can have a little fun at the ref’s expense, it’s expected.  But when you go a little too far with it, remember that the person you’re sitting by just might be his crazy girlfriend whose been sitting there all night watching kids she doesn’t know play some very unentertaining basketball she doesn’t care about.  And when she’s had enough of your bull, she might just let you and your mama know it.
